I'm very excited to present my very first blog post! My name is Coco. I'm a 5 year old chocolate lab who spends my life doing a great impression of an excited little pup. My Ma and Pa run a holiday cottage company in the Tyne Valley called Hang My Hat - www.hangmyhat.co.uk - and, as most of the cottages are dog friendly, I thought it was about time to take a good look around the area and let their guests know the very best places to take their pooches when they come to visit.
As I was due to be run ragged around Tyne Green in Hexham this afternoon, Ma and Pa settled on visiting The Heart of Northumberland - www.thehearthexham.com - in the centre of Hexham, to check out its dog friendliness. There was a sign outside which confirmed it was 'dog friendly' but Ma likes to check - just to be sure. (She had to be doubly sure today after foolishly forgetting to bring my lead which meant I could jump around like the wee pup that I really am and go and say a noisy hello to the other dogs in there at any given opportunity). The friendly barman looked surprised that Ma had even asked - as if; why on earth wouldn't dogs be allowed?! Quite right too! There are no restricted areas for us - we can go pretty much wherever we like (although Ma wasn't impressed when I trotted off behind the bar to check out behind the scenes.) I really liked all the staff - I got a lovely 'hello' from everyone working and was even offered a water bowl all of my own!
Ma and Pa seemed very happy with the menu - a good choice of bar snacks, starters, mains and desserts without being an overwhelming list which they would have taken forever to choose from. They must look like nice people because actually the Chef made them very posh looking fish finger sandwiches which wasn't even on the menu; just because they asked! I would have loved to try the fish fingers - homemade and freshly cooked - but unfortunately they disappeared far too quickly! The delicious looking sweet potato chips were devoured by Ma, Pa and my Tormentor Toddler - he who threw surprisingly (and disappointingly) little of his lunch on the floor for me to hoover up. I guess healthy veg sticks, hummus and olives aren't really my bag, but it would have been nice to have the option the way I normally do at home.
Pa didn't take the opportunity to try any of the fab looking local real ales and craft beers on offer this time, but I suspect he will try one or two next time he visits. Ma and Pa seemed very happy with their bill of less than £30 for the 3 lunches and drinks, and I was glad to hear that they are looking forward to us all going back sometime soon! The Heart was a very cool place to spend an hour or so on a Sunday afternoon - a very relaxed atmosphere, lovely decor and chilled out, friendly staff.
