Whether your children want to pet a pony, pedal a tractor, go glamping or indulge in ice cream, there are plenty of activities the whole family will enjoy within a short drive or walk from our Hang My Hat holiday cottages.


This Little Piggy Lives Near Morpeth


Northumberland Country Zoo – near Morpeth – have animals from wallabies to racoons to Shetland ponies, reptiles, pigs and donkeys. Right now, they have the cutest, black baby pigs. You can have animal encounters of the small and furry kind, and there’s a large outdoor play area and plenty of places to picnic. There is also mini golf - and tiny tractors for tiny toes to pedal. This is a thirty minute to an hour’s drive from our holiday cottages.

Catering for Children's Tastes: Walwick Hall


If you feel like a family lunch, Walwick Hall has an enclosed play area with climbing frame for children to burn off steam before eating, and there are rolling lawns and a dedicated children's menu. Chesters Roman Fort nearby have events kids will love, such as hunting for ‘dragon’s eggs’.


Carpenter's Loft


The Crown, Humshaugh, also welcomes children and hosts a wheelbarrow race every year as part of Humshaugh Family Fun Day – pretty Carpenter’s Loft is next door (sleeps 2) and it's close to Walwick too.

Dark Sky Glamping



What could be MORE child friendly than the Dark Sky Glamping Village, by Hadrian's Wall, also in Humshaugh? Creamy Cows' Ice Cream - Wheelbirks Parlour


Wheelbirks, near Stocksfield, has so many places to play. This fabulous ice cream parlour has an indoor play area for small ones, and a lovely, large garden, with a big rope swing, hens, horses and an orchard to explore. There’s all this and the most fabulous Jersey ice cream parlour and café.


Country Kitchen at Madera - and Gastropub in Village


Lovely village cottage, Madera, above (sleeps 4 + cot) and country house Low Rigg, below (sleeps 6 + sofabed) are on the doorstep of Wheelbirks.  Country lovers will relish the extensive grounds, terrace and private woodland at Low Rigg - the garden is a dream for children and romantics.  Madera has far reaching views from the pretty village of Hedley-on-the-Hill, a gastropub in the village and the cutest country kitchen, with its creamy Aga oven at the heart.
